Product Overview
The STAR 1200XLD is an optical see-through eyewear system, enhanced with AR capabilities. It employs transparent displays, an integrated camera system and head tracker and connects host devices with HDMI output. The AR system consists of numerous component; some working in combination with others and some that function independently.

STAR 1200XLD Display
The STAR 1200XLD utilizes Vuzix Quantum Optics to provide transparent displays that enable you to see the real world directly through the display screens with video content overlaid in your sight line. The twin displays are capable of showing 2D or 3D content in a 75-inch virtual display, as seen from 10 feet (~3m). A variety of display controls are provided on-screen, accessible through its attached Controller. Accutilt, a patented display angle adjustment, adjustable eye-separation and an all-digital interface to the content source further enhance the quality and clarity of the video display.

HD Camera
For use in AR applications, the STAR 1200XLD is equipped with a 1080p HD camera mounted on the face of the eyewear. The high performance camera connects independently to a USB port on the host computer and is seen as a standard USB webcam by Windows. By utilizing the native OS support for USB webcams, this system is compatible with most leading AR content creation software for Windows. In AR applications, the camera is used primarily for marker or target recognition. Support for frame rates of up to 60 fps and adaptable to varied lighting conditions make this camera ideally suited for demanding AR.

STAR 1200XLD Controller
A “Controller” provides the interface between the eyewear display and head tracker components and the host device, providing the content and AR content processing. The STAR 1200XLD Controller is hardwired to the eyewear and supports connection to virtually all devices providing HDMI audio/video output. This includes desktop and laptop computers, portable media players and mobiles, such as smartphones and tablets, as well as set top entertainment (gaming) systems and Blu-ray Disc players. The HDMI 1.4 compliant Controller also provide power to the eyewear through its rechargeable lithium ion battery, a head tracker connection when connected to a Windows PC, and display controls.

Audio

STAR 1200xld - Audio Capabilities

Great audio is essential for a realistic AR experience. The removable noise-isolating earphones come complete with three sizes of noise-isolation cushions to provide outstanding audio while blocking out much of the ambient noise. The earphones can be unplugged if you wish to use an alternate speaker system.

Augmented Reality
AR (Augmented Reality) is a technology that enables the insertion of computer-generated content into your view of the real world. The Vuzix STAR 1200XLD is a tool that enables a first-person view of AR and provides resources to enhance the AR experience. The STAR 1200XLD, and other Vuzix AR eyewear, do not create AR content, but enable it to be experienced from a realistic first-person perspective. Rather than enduring the parallax of content delivered from multiple viewing angles, a first-person view enables you to see AR content in a more realistic fashion – from your own unique and real world perspective. When viewing AR content, such as the Vuzix mascot “VuzAR” in the following video clip you’ll see what a typical 3rd person AR scene looks like.

If viewed through AR eyewear, such as the STAR 1200XLD, you can view VuzAR in 3D, sitting on your desktop. If you stand and move around, your view of VuzAR changes with your movements – it’s like he is really there.

AR Content Creation
Thanks to the unique design of the STAR 1200XLD it is compatible with most leading AR content authoring systems. Basically, if your AR authoring software can display its output through an HDMI port and accept video input from a standard USB webcam, it is compatible with the STAR 1200XLD’s audio/video delivery and AR marker recognition.

Features

Vuzix STAR AR eyewear sets the standard for see-through AR systems. The STAR 1200XLD is the first optical see-through AR system offering an all-digital interface to HDMI output devices including personal computers, smartphones and tablets, and even Blu-ray players delivering DRM protected content.

Compatibility
AR is an emerging market undergoing constant change. The STAR 1200XLD is designed to provide broad compatibility through its extensive use of industry standard components and technologies. Many of its key components, such as the displays, speakers and camera, just work out-of-the-box on Windows-based PCs while audio/video work with virtually all HDMI output devices.

Displays
Vuzix patented Quantum Optics see-through displays empower the wearer to view the real world directly with computer-generated content in a 75-inch virtual display, as seen from 10 feet (~3m). Twin16:9 native aspect ratio WVGA (852 x 480) displays with adjustable eye-separation provide the best possible display clarity in standard 2D or spectacular 3D. No special graphics cards or drivers are required for 3D, just industry standard side-by-side 3D content.

Controller
The importance of the eyewear’s Controller is often overlooked. It provides an interface to your host device, audio and video controls, and video processing. The STAR 1200XLD’s Controller supports HDMI 1.4a. This not only enables it to connect to virtually any device offering HDMI output but also enables 3D video in a broader range of formats as well as DRM protected content. Never before has a single eyewear model been able to offer this range of connectivity and simplicity with so few components.

Audio
What is great video without stunning audio? High fidelity, noise-isolating earphones provide crisp clear audio while dramatically reducing distracting external noise. The earphones come complete with a variety of noise-isolation ring sizes and the earphones can be removed to enable the use of alternate audio systems.

Video Capture
Video Capture is an important component in enabling a realistic AR experience. An improved UVC (Universal Video Class) compliant 1080p HD camera now offers reduced weight and size with high definition performance. The STAR’s new HD camera operates independent from other eyewear components and is seen by Windows as a standard UVC webcam for maximum plug ‘n play convenience and flexibility.

Head Tracker
Your AR application may know your location through its host device but GPS positioning cannot tell you the user’s current direct or angle of view – the Wrap Tracker on the STAR 1200XLD can. The Wrap Tracker plugs directly into the STAR display module and provides 3 degrees of freedom head tracking for tracker-enabled applications. A Vuzix AR/VR SDK provides a Windows DLL and programming examples making integration fast and easy.
